Chibesakunda’s integrity damaged by government

The government should be held accountable for the damage and slandering suffered by the Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda, Zambia Democratic Conference (ZADECO) president Langton Sichone has said.

Mr Sichone has appealed to President Michael Sata to with immediate effect revoke the appointment Justice Chibesakunda and find a candidate that would not be disqualified by the constitution.

Mr. Sichone said that the continued debate over the continued stay of Justice Chibesakunda in the office of the Chief Justice was unnecessary because the constitution was very clear about the qualification of a candidate for the office of the Chief Justice.

“This is what happens when people holding constitutional offices behave in a manner that compromises the very office they swear to protect and uphold. Justice Chibesakunda is in this mess because of lack of personal restraint and she has allowed herself to be used and now she has destroyed the integrity she had earned in the years of her service beyond redemption,” Mr. Sichone said.

Mr Sichone said many Zambians had spoken against her continued illegal stay in office of the Chief Justice stating that time had come for her to listen to the demands of citizens and step down to mend her already  fractured reputation.

Mr. Sichone said the best Justice Chibesakunda could do was take reflect on what she had done to the judiciary and the country and consider learning from her predecessors who had found themselves in similar circumstances.

“Justice Chibesakunda has no option but to leave the office of the Chief Justice and if she is not willing to do that, then let the President use his wisdom to remove her. Her continued stay is highly questionable and it is not in the best interest of the nation and the profession. Mr. Sichone said.

MMD president Nevers Mumba and his counterpart of the United Party for National Development (UPND) have on separate occasions threatened that they would march to the grounds of the Supreme Court and picket Justice Chibesakunda to vacate the office of the Chief Justice.

And ADD president Charles Milupi has reminded Justice Chibesakunda that she should not take the matter as a family issue in order to promulgate the PF agenda.

Mr. Milupi warned that Zambians would hold her accountable for damage she had decided to cause to the judicial system.

People’s Party (PP) president Mike Mulongoti has advised Justice Chibesakunda to step down in order to redeem her damaged reputation.

Mr. Mulongoti said Justice Chibesakunda was a qualified person who did not need to be reminded that she was breaching the law by insisting to occupy the office of the Chief Justice.
