Katele, six others jailed 5 years

The Lusaka High Court has upheld the 5-year jail term slapped on former Finance Minister Katele Kalumba together with six other co-accused for corruption charges.

Others jailed with Katele are former Finance Permanent Secretary Stella Chibanda, former finance chief economist Bede Mphande, former finance director of budget Boniface Nonde, former secretary to the treasury Professor Benjamin Mweene, former Access Financial Services Limited (AFSL) directors Faustin Kabwe and Aaron Chungu.Lusaka High Court deputy director of court operations Edward Musona sitting as High Court judge convicted Katele former MMD national secretary together with his co-accused when he delivered judgment in the long running corruption trial.In May 2010, the Lusaka magistrate Court convicted Katele together with six of his co-accused on corruption charges.The corruption charges relate to the payments made to US security companies Systems Innovation and Wilbain Incorporation involving US$20 million during the time Katele served as Finance Minister in former President Fredrick Chiluba’s government.
