Zambia should abolish death penalty

It is not enough for President Michael Sata to commute death sentences to life imprisonment but he should go further by abolishing the death penalty altogether.
In a Press statement, a consortium of four organisations campaigning for the abolition of the death penalty says while the gesture by Mr Sata was welcome government should also show commitment towards improving conditions in many prisons.
The consortium said it had always been of the view and contention that life was sacred and must not be taken away by any reason.  “It has been the consortiums argument that execution of capital offenders does not deter other would be offenders just as they were in effect a form of torture, cruel inhumane and degrading form of punishment .
