Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema is today expected to appear in the Livingstone magistrates’ court for trial on charge of proposing violence.
Both Mr. Hichilema’s lawyers and his sureties have confirmed the development to the Daily Nation in Livingstone.
Mr Hichilema who was arrested in Livingstone on February 26, 2013 and charged with one count of proposing violence contrary to section 91a subsection 1 (a)(b) of the penal code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia denied the charge before magistrate Chola Musonda. He was released on K2, 000 bail.
According to the statement of offence, it is alleged that on February 25, 2013 in Livingstone, Mr. Hichilema issued a statement on Radio Zambezi FM which was meant to calculate or incite his supporters to act in a manner which could result into violence.
Mr. Hichilema is being represented by Jack Mwimbu of Mwimbu Mulaza and Company, Fredrick Chunga of Silweya and Company, John Kapepe of MAK Partners and other Lusaka based lawyers.
Mr. Hichilema was arrested in Livingstone following the death of a PF cadre from Monze District Harrison Chanda who was killed a few days before the infamous Livingstone by election which also saw more than 40 UPND members including Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkomboa and Kalomo central Member of Parliament Request Muntanga arrested.
