15 of the 18 people that perished in the Chibombo minibus accident were put to rest in a mass burial at Old Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Kabwe on Saturday as thousands of people thronged Godfrey Ucar Chitalu stadium where the funeral service was conducted.
The bodies of the victims which were transported in Military trucks and their coffins carried by combined military personnel, left the people of Kabwe in tears as the procession headed to Chitalu stadium.
There was no body viewing for members of the public due to the bad state of the bodies.
Thousands of people lined the streets from Kabwe General Hospital to the stadium where Kabwe District Commissioner Patrick Chishala in his address to the mourners requested government to turn the Kabwe Lusaka road into a dual carriage way. Chishala also described the deceased as gallant bread winners for their families and that the government was mourning with the bereaved families.
16 people died on the spot on Tuesday when a Toyota Hiace minibus they were travelling in lost control and hit into an oncoming truck after a tyre burst, while two others died later at the University Teaching Hospital.
