There is too much secrecy that surrounds the death of the Patriotic Front (PF) cadre Harrison Chanda, says UPND deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa.
And Mr. Mweetwa has said that Zambia’s human rights and governance record is at risk of total abuse under the Patriotic Front (PF) government and the country’s record of good governance has been destroyed by the Gestapo type of a regime under President Michael Sata.
In an interview, Mr. Mweetwa said that it was surprising and worrying that no one in government and the Zambia Police were telling the nation the truth about where they picked the body of Harrison Chanda.
Mr. Mweetwa who is Choma Central UPND Member of Parliament demanded for the truth to come out on the death of Chanda rather than the PF leadership accusing the UPND to have killed him.
“For us in the UPND this is a serious matter because it involves life of someone. We therefore demand that the police tell the nation where they picked the body from. We also demand that the Police tell the nation the distance between where the body was picked from and where the campaign centre is. We find it strange that police in their investigations are leaving out serious issues that would lead to the actual killer of Chanda,” he said.
He said that the secrecy surrounding the death of Chanda was not health especially that it was being done by those that had accused the UPND of having killed the PF Monze District Chairman.
And Mr. Mweetwa said that currently, Zambia’s record of human rights, good governance and the respect of the rule of law was at stake under the PF government.
He said that the continued indiscriminate arrests of UPND members in Livingstone was worrying as it bordered on human rights abuses by the PF government and therefore the international community should show interests in what was happening to safe guard the lives of the people of Zambia.
Mr. Mweetwa wondered why police were only arresting UPND members living out the PF cadres who started the attack.
“The conduct by the police in Livingstone is an acceptable because it is being done at the behest of the PF government. These arrests are highly questionable because they are only targeted at the UPND members leaving out the PF cadres who are fighting others. I have to remind the police that in a democracy governments come and go but the system remain. So it is important for them to operate in a professional manner rather than allowing political whims to control them,” he said.
Mr. Mweetwa disclosed that yesterday police arrested four more UPND members who they have connected to the death of a PF cadre in the area before they searched and detained Livingstone mayor Aggrey Njekwa into unknown place.
“I want also to state that what the police are doing now is total and blatant abuse of human rights by the people we have entrusted to keep peace and order in the country. People were beaten to the level where police themselves have failed to comprehend. We want to tell them that this country is on a verge of collapse, the good governance record known for this country has been destroyed in one year seven months of the PF in government and that is what this country is risking,” he said.
