Nevers escapes death

MMD  President Nevers Mumba yesterday escaped death when the Mazhandu family bus he was supposed to travel on from Livingstone caught fire and burnt to ashes.

However, on board the bus were deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu, who occupied seat No. 34,  and other members with whom he was supposed to travel.

Narrating the incident Mr. Nyangu said the entire delegation was supposed for “safety’s sake” to travel back to Lusaka by bus but a few minutes before departure and after Dr. Mumba insisted that the group prays, he decided to remain behind and use the vehicle he had abandoned.

“We then made attempts to get him a seat on an aircraft which proved difficult and that’s why he remained behind and used his personal vehicle.”

According to reports the bus which was carrying about 60 people caught fire shortly after leaving Zimba, enroute to Lusaka, when the drive noticed smoke coming from the engine.  He immediately brought the bus to a halt and had all passengers disembark.

There was a frantic effort to try and save some of the cargo and luggage.  None of the passengers were hurt in the mishap.
